Virgin Atlantic islands

There are not many such places left in Europe! Indeed, the Azores, despite its stunning landscapes and interesting sights, remain unpopular and undiscovered. Mass tourism has still not arrived here. When you sit down in a local pub the locals will gladly talk to you, and you will get to know their real life.

Black sand beaches

If you are a lover of unusual, wild beaches, you will be delighted by the black, volcanic sand beaches in the Azores, which the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in particular are full of. The sand here takes on a variety of shades, from gray to complete black, and the Azorean shores are ideal not only for swimming, but also for long walks.

Post-volcanic landscapes

The Azores will amaze you with its views! The former volcanic cones still visible and prominent in the landscape, the gentle green hills and the lakes hidden in former volcanic calderas make an unearthly impression. The best way to explore them is by trekking, as the islands are covered by a network of hiking trails.

Hot springs, geysers and waterfalls

Lush green forest and huge woody ferns shrouded by the ever-present mist, and among this scenery hidden hot springs in which to bathe, is one of ideas for spending an afternoon in the Azores, especially on the island of São Miguel. This is where you'll find the largest number of such geothermal spots. Exploring Azorean waterfalls, on the other hand, is best suited to the island of Flores, where you'll see as many as 20 waterfalls along the stretch of coast from Fajãzinha to Fajã Grande!

The green garden of the Atlantic, the land of blooming hydrangeas

This is what the Azores are called. The idea of the local government to make hydrangeas the symbol of the islands caught on, and not only public institutions but also residents began planting a whole lot of them here.

Europe's only tea and pineapple plantations

Brought here in 1883 by emigrants from Macau tea, has become so well accepted in the Azores that to this day it is not only grown here, especially at the Gorreana plantation near Ribeira Grande on São Miguel, but also produced and shipped for export - both black and green tea. Europe's only pineapple plantations, on the other hand, are located near Vila Franca do Campo, also on São Miguel. The fruit here, however, tastes a bit different from its exotic varieties, because in the Azores it is grown in greenhouses. Interestingly, in addition to tea and pineapples, bananas, oranges and grapes are also grown on the islands.

Whale watching

The Azores are on the seasonal migration route of whales from north to south and vice versa. They used to be a base for whalers, and now - for all those who like to hunt these giant mammals.... With a camera in hand. The best time to see them is April and May, when whales call in large numbers in nearby waters. You can see them during a boat trip or, if you're lucky, also from a higher part of the shore.
Azory

The oldest tavern on the Atlantic

Peter Cafe Sport, located in the village of Horta on the small island of Faial, was once the last stop for thirsty sailors before their onward journey across the Atlantic. Originally a convenience store, it was later transformed into a tavern that has been in continuous operation since 1918! It was here that sailors left their last pennies .... and letters for friends who were yet to arrive in the Azores on the next ship. Many of them lie to this day behind the bar constantly waiting for their addressees. A must-visit point for anyone who likes nautical, maritime atmosphere!
Azory

Cuisine

Azorean cuisine is rich in seafood, but its specialty is cozido das furnas. This dish is a composition of vegetables and meats cooked in special pots that have been passed down from generation to generation. The pots are placed in volcanic pits dug right next to the hot springs. Many families or even restaurants here have their own pit where they prepare this local delicacy. You can taste it only on São Miguel!
Azory

Local wine

A beverage you absolutely must try while on the Azores! It is especially famous on the island of Pico, where the history of winemaking goes back as far as the 15th century. Time when the first settlers arrived in the Azores, and Terceira, where the sweet wine of Biscoitos, called verdelho, is made. It used to be exported mainly to the Russian court and was reportedly one of the tsars' favorite drinks. Since it is scarcely available in Europe, it is best enjoyed at a local small winery.
