The best way to experience that small is truly beautiful is by spending a holiday on Porto Santo. Until recently known only to travelers, it lies about 40 km from the northern coast of Madeira, measuring 11 km in length, 7 km in width, and home to around 4,500 inhabitants, with about 3,000 living in Vila Baleira, the island's capital and its only town. Portuguese sailors named the island "Holy Port" when it gave them shelter during a storm. The most famous resident of Porto Santo was Christopher Columbus, who spent three years here before his journey to America and is said to have met the love of his life. His house in Vila Baleira hosts a small museum, which is a popular spot for tourists. The town features typical Portuguese architecture, with white houses and winding streets, along with a good number of local bars and restaurants serving fresh fish and local wine. However, the biggest attraction is the fantastic 9-kilometer-long beach, stretching all the way to Ponta de Lacheta, and the stunning emerald sea. The golden sand is known for its therapeutic properties, especially for rheumatic conditions. The beaches are never crowded, and even during peak season, you can relax peacefully. For lovers of active leisure, there is a fantastic, beautifully located 18-hole golf course, and the island offers excellent conditions for windsurfing, sailing, and horseback riding. In the northern part of the island, volcanic hills, cliffs, and rocky coves create a wonderful backdrop for hiking.
